New Musical Theatre Course!

New Full Time One Year Musical Theatre Course!

Starting September 19th 2016!




This Intensive Preparation course aims to give students a true taste of the demands, both physically and mentally, that will be made when they progress to  more advanced courses or into the highly competitive world of Theatre and Performance

This 30 week course will offer training in Singing, Acting and Dancing. The course will have  singing, Acting and dance teachers that will teach each week. Therefore getting to know each students strengths and weaknesses and helping them to reach their full potential.

The course will also have guest teachers each week. This will give the students the opportunity to experience many different techniques and styles in all three disciplines and to benefit from the experience and knowledge of many teachers and performers.

The students will take part in an end of term show case after each of our three terms, which will be held in our own performance space. This means that along with progressive classes and guest teachers they will be experiencing a rehearsal environment throughout the course. This will encourage the students to push themselves, knowing that a performance is never far away.


Bloomfield Health and Leisure Club.

Our Course fee includes full membership to The Bloomfield Health & Leisure Club.

Students will attend a minimum of three sessions a week. They will be guided by the Team at Bloomfield through their own personal Gym programme, along with fitness classes and training session designed to meet our groups needs. They will also have full use of Sauna, Steam room Jacuzzi and Pool.

Anne-Marie is a Fellowship Member and Examiner for The Associated Board of Dance. She is also Chairperson for A.B.D Ireland.

Anne-Marie began teaching in 1983 in The U.K. She was choreographer for The Great and Small Theatre Company.

She performed as lead dancer in Cabaret all over the U.K before moving to Ireland in 1989 and establishing Energy Plus School of Dance .

Anne-Marie has produced, directed and choreographed both Musicals and Dance shows every year since then. She has taught many, many students from their first baby dance class and on to achieve their teaching qualifications and positions in third level performance colleges. Her students have gone on to gain employment on West End Shows as well as Television performances.

Anne-Marie brings her  30 years teaching experience to this Course.

“As well as years of teaching experience I have the added advantage of being a Parent with two daughters that have gone on to study Musical Theatre in the U.K. I understand the demands made on students as a Parent and a teacher. I believe that Preparation Courses such as the one we are offering at Energy Plus Studios are essential for young students. Taking the leap from one or two lessons a week to full-time training is indeed a bit of a shock to the system! My aim  is to give a balance of Guidance & Encouragement along with the hard work and discipline that is needed to run the race”.

Anne-Marie will be teaching ballet, Tap  & Jazz as well as organizing project work throughout the course.


donalDonal Courtney

Donal is a native of Killarney. He graduated from the Gaiety school of Acting, Dublin in 1991 and has since worked in theatre, TV and film in Ireland and abroad. He holds an MA in theatre from NUI Maynooth.
On stage he has appeared in the works of John B Keane, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett and William Shakespeare. He recently played Estragon in Smock Alley Theatre’s acclaimed production of Waiting for Godot.
On screen he has appeared in the Tudors , Maru, Fair city and  recently in the award winning short film Cutting Grass with John Hannah and the feature film the Gift.
He has written several plays including Election night , For whom we deliver and God has no country, which tells the story of Monsignor Hugh O Flaherty and now features on the English junior cycle curriculum.
He teaches acting at the American College, Dublin , IES Study Abroad Dublin, and the Gaiety School of Acting Dublin, where his past students include Sarah Greene, Charlie Murphy , Mo Dunford. Donal was also Oscar Nominee Michael Fassbender’s first acting teacher.
Donal is also a Drama Adjudicator and is a member of GIDA and Irish Actor’s Equity.


The course will consist of:

johnJohn White

John White has a long and varied engagement with Musical  Theatre. His students have progressed to the Central  School of Acting in London and a range of other UK  theatre schools.

He has musically directed over thirty musicals,  including Chicago for Cambridge Independent Theatre, Jesus Christ Superstar for both Lakeland Productions and the Fun Company, and most recently All Shook Up for Dry Ice Theatre Company in the Axis Theatre Ballymun Dublin.

John has also directed two operas – The Torc of Gold for National Chamber Choir, and Carmen for Glasthule Opera – which was staged in the Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoighre.

John also worked with six young people  from Dublin Youth Theatre to devise and direct Word Made Flesh as part of their First Year One Act Festival where  professional directors are employed to work with new members.

John has also conducted a range of choirs and choral groups, including the UCD  College choir, Mullingar Choral Society and was a music teacher in two Secondary schools for many years.


Course Content:

Developing of Singing Voice .This part of the course will help students ‘find their voice’ with areas covered such as :

Singing Posture, Diaphragmatic breathing, Developing resonators – head mouth, Finding your correct range –( Soprano Alto Tenor Baritone Bass) Expanding your range to its full potential, Singing in tune Phrasing , breath taking, dynamics.

Effective vocal warm ups before singing, Chest Voice – Head Voice – Falsetto, Voice Placement and Projection Singing as part of an ensemble – the course will explore the following areas:

Holding a harmony line (homophonic) , Holding an independent harmony line (counterpoint), Blending and tuning your voice with your harmony line, Singing vowels and consonants, Ensemble tuning Interpreting and delivering a Solo Musical Number.

This part of the course will involve the student learning how to perform a musical number that will demonstrate the best aspects of their voice. They will explore how to convey hidden meanings in the lyrics and melody.

These numbers may well become audition songs for future applications to Theatre Departments or as Audition pieces.


Guest Teachers:


joshJosh Wharmby started dancing at the age   of seven as part of the Harlequin Stage   School, after leaving school he went on to train at LIPA before graduating in 2010.

Josh realised his ambition early to become a   professional commercial dancer and fresh   from graduation went on to work with the likes of American choreographer Brian   Friedman on ITV’s The X Factor and Boyoncé’s Single Ladies choreographer Ja Quel Knight and most recently performed at The Brit Awards 2015 with Taylor Swift.

Other credits include Kylie Minogue, Nicole Scherzinger, Rita Ora, Take That, Alexandra Burke, Pink, Stooshe, Will I Am, Gloria Gaynor, Disney, X Factor UK, and France Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball and Summertime Ball. Josh runs his own dance classes and workshops around the UK.


meganMegan Carton A.A.B.D  began dancing classes at 3yrs old. She trained at Energy Plus Studios where she achieved her first teaching qualification with Associated Board of Dance.

She continued her training with Musical Theatre Ireland in Cork and then on to The Centre P.A.C  U.K. Megan will be one of our many guest teachers and will be taking classes in Ballet, Tap, jazz and Contemporary dance as well as Musical Theatre.




leanneLeanne Carton A.A.B.D trained at Energy Plus Studios from the age of 3yrs, and gained her teaching qualifications with Associated Board of Dance.

She then went to Cork to study with Musical Theatre Ireland and then to the U.K to study at The Centre P.A.C. Leanne will be one of our   guest teachers and will take classes in all aspects of Musical Theatre, as well as Jazz,  Tap, Contemporary, commercial &   Hip Hop.



TraceyTracey Kimberly –Albatova trained in Birmingham and Coventry to associate teachers level in IDTA, BTDA,   MIDAA (ABD), and RAD.

She took her   first professional contract aged eighteen and continued to study dance with tutors from the Greek national ballet Maurice Bejart company, The Bolshi Ballet and Luxemburg ballet and still does today, the learning never stops!  “after twelve years I became a choreographer, I have genuine experience in today’s performance industry which enables me to give a student realistic experience of what today’s working environment could mean for them”.
